I wanted to share two images from my trip to Bearwallow Mountain(left) and three images from my Ecuador trip in 2017 that I have finished developing and I hope to print sometime soon. I have also chosen to share images from that 2017 trip to Facebook this month. I hope to share more color imagery next month. I'm also stoked to have Natalia Maxi as our featured emerging/young photographer for the month of April. Keep reading to find out more about her personal experience with photography so far.

1. Could you share with us a little about yourself, your childhood, where you live and what first aroused your interest in photography?
My name is Natalia, I am 24 years old and I live in the city of Cuenca. I am currently studying Biology, Ecology and Management. When I was a child my parents had a small house in the country so I could say that my childhood was spent in contact with nature and animals. The interest to learn from photography came at the age 18, when, wondering among my dad's things, I became curious to see how a peculiar digital Sony Mavica camera functioned (because it recorded the photos on a floppy disk), then between curiosity and wanting to know how the images looked, I started taking pictures of what surrounded me, the flowers, the insects, among other things. Since that moment I have keep snooping through a lens.
2. How would you describe your work to someone who is not familiar with it?
Most of my photos are of nature and I could describe it as an introspective process because when I take a detail photo of the flowers or a leaf, I attempt to create an image that has its own voice and personality and that the image itself is able to transmit something of that. For example, while taking a photo of a plant growing through the cracks of the concrete, what comes to mind in that moment are words that speak to the resilience that these organism have to the anthropogenic activities, then, everything depends on the scenario in which I find myself, but there is always an empathy with these elements that manifest, adapt or change and is perhaps what catches my attention when taking a picture and what I want to convey.
3. What stories stand out when you reflect on the time given to this practice?
Well when I discovered that I liked photography I started with a small camera but I thought I could not make good photographs. While I was practicing and taking pictures I realized that the camera does not make the photo or the photographer. The important thing is the way you visualize things and how you want to project your work regardless of the type of camera you use. I started taking my time for a photo to come out good, so we must emphasize that patience and constant learning is necessary in order to get good results and I think that applies to everything you do, not only in photography.
4. Is there a work of art that has influenced you? What inspires you, in general?
Ashes and the Snow by Gregory Colbert, a work that transmits the empathy between nature and man, in addition, because of a documentary that I saw called La Sal de la Tierra, I discovered Sebastião Salgado, a socio-documentary photographer whose works transmit a very strong message of humanity and also some photographs of nature and the landscape by Cristina Mittermeier or by Rosa Isabel Vázquez. In general I am inspired by nature but I also find inspiraion in painting, music, traveling and knowing places or small corners in my city and the friends that I have who also do photography, of any style, whether it be nature, social or more artistic, I learn a lot from them.
5. Can you share us something funny that relates to photography? Like trying to take a picture with your lens cap on, it usually happens.
Yes, it has happened to me sometimes, to take a photo with the lens cap on hahaha or take an over exposed photo without realizing it. Something not so funny was when we were taking pictures in the mountains with some friends. I had forgotten my bag with an extra lens I was carrying and after descending a few meters of the mountain I realized that I was not carrying my bag, so I had to climb again to the place where I imagined leaving it and fortunately I recovered it. Taking pictures distracts you from many things and I am generally a distracted person, but even more so when I take pictures hahaha.
6. Reasons why you choose to get as close as possible to your photographic subjects?
Well at first it was something experimental, I wanted to observe more closely the details of a flower or the wings of an insect, then I enjoyed being in contact with that until I came to contemplate the beauty of other small things that surround us. It is relevant in that they are only small to our eyes and that is what I try to show.
7. In what aspect does photography relate to the career you wish to pursue?
Photography is a useful tool in biological research and conservation; with an image you transmit a message that can create awareness or knowledge of a certain species, become familiar with its scientific name, its habitat and how it interacts with the environment, which has also allowed it to be part of many studies related to that.
8. While we watch your images, we can see the different ways in which dramatic light is used in most of them, why do you think you prefer this kind of light?
When I take the photo, I like it to have a certain power and I try to highlight certain details that I want to be exposed. The light exposes all that hidden art that goes unnoticed, even if the image is black and white, the light shows us that life exists in that image.
9. What aspects of photography attract you more as a person?
Photography has allowed me to show that imaginative or sensitive side that I have of admiring nature and my environment. I also enjoy the aspect of being able to share it and learn from other styles.
10. Any particular advice for the youth of today who is beginning to experiment with photography?
Enjoy and discover all the possibilities that photography can give us. We are in constant discovery, whether you have a professional camera, semi-professional, analog or simply your cell phone, the important thing is to continue learning, shooting, meeting people who like the same art, taking courses –it improve your skills and you get to know new techniques, but above all to experiment and not let the art of looking beyond what is commonly seen be extinguished.
1. ¿Podría compartir con nosotros un poco sobre usted, su infancia, dónde vive y qué fue lo primero que despertó su interés en la fotografía?
Mi nombre es Natalia, tengo 24 años y vivo en la ciudad de Cuenca, actualmente estoy estudiando la carrera de Biología, Ecología y Gestión.Cuando era niña mis papás tenían una pequeña casa en el campo por lo que podría decir que mi infancia se desarrolló en contacto con la naturaleza y los animales. El interés por aprender de la fotografía fué a los 18 años, cuando, entre las cosas de mi papá, me dió curiosidad por ver cómo funcionaba una cámara Sony digital Mavica muy peculiar (porque guardaba las fotos en disquete), entonces entre la curiosidad y saber cómo se veía las imágenes, comencé a tomar fotos de lo que me rodeaba, las flores, los insectos, y de otros elementos. Desde ese entonces sigo curioseando a través de un lente.
2. ¿Cómo describirías tu trabajo a alguien que no esté familiarizado con él?
La mayoría de mis fotos son de naturaleza pero podría describirlo como introspectivo ya que al tomar la foto en detalle de las flores o de una hoja, intento que la imagen tenga su vida y personalidad y que logre transmitir algo de aquello, por ejemplo, al tomar una foto de una planta en medio del cemento, proviene en mi mente palabras que significa mucho en ese momento como la resiliencia que estos seres tienen ante las actividades antrópicas, entonces, todo depende del escenario en el que me encuentre, pero siempre surge una empatía con estos elementos que se manifiestan, se adaptan o cambian y es quizás lo que me llama la atención al momento de tomar una foto y lo que quiero transmitir.
3. ¿Qué historias se destacan cuando reflexionas sobre el tiempo dado a esta práctica?
Bueno cuando descubrí que me gustaba la fotografía empecé con una cámara pequeña pero pensaba que no podría hacer buenas fotos, mientras iba practicando y tomando fotos me di cuenta que la cámara no hace la foto o al fotógrafo, lo importante es la forma en cómo mires y quieras proyectar tu trabajo independientemente del tipo de cámara que uses, me tomaba mi tiempo para que la foto saliera bien, entonces hay que destacar la paciencia y el constante aprendizaje para tener buenos resultados y eso creo que se aplica en todo lo que hagas, no solo en la fotografía.
4.¿Hay alguna obra de arte te ha influenciado? ¿Qué te inspira, en general?
Ashes and the Snow, de Gregory Colbert, una obra que transmite la empatía entre la naturaleza y el hombre, además, por un documental que ví llamado La Sal de la Tierra, descubrí a Sebastião Salgado, un fotógrafo sociodocumental cuyos trabajos transmiten un mensaje muy fuerte de la humanidad y algunas fotografías de naturaleza y paisaje de Cristina Mittermeier o Rosa Isabel Vázquez. En general me inspira la naturaleza pero también el arte de la pintura, la música, el viajar y conocer lugares o pequeños rincones que tiene mi ciudad y amigos que también hacen fotografía, de cualquier estilo, sea de naturaleza, social o artística, aprendo mucho de ellos.
5. Puedes contarnos algo gracioso que se relacione con la fotografía? Como tratar de tomar una foto con la tapa de tu lente puesta, suele pasar.
Sí, me ha pasado algunas veces tomar con la tapa puesta jajaja o tomar una foto sobre expuesta sin darme cuenta, algo no muy gracioso en ese momento, fué cuando estábamos tomando fotos en la montaña con unos amigos, yo había dejado mi bolso con un lente más que llevaba y luego de bajar algunos metros de la montaña me dí cuenta que no cargaba mi bolso, entonces tuve que nuevamente subir al sitio donde me imaginaba haberlo dejado, afortunadamente lo recuperé. El tomar fotos te distrae de muchas cosas y yo generalmente soy distraía, mi nivel es mayor al momento de tomar fotos jajaja.
6. ¿Razones que optas por acercarte lo más posible a tus sujetos fotográficos?
Bueno al principio fue algo experimental, quería observar más de cerca los detalles de una flor o las alas de un insecto, luego me gustó estar en contacto con aquello hasta llegar a contemplar la belleza de las cosas pequeñas que nos rodean, es algo relativo porque solo están pequeñas a nuestros ojos y eso es lo que intento mostrar.
7. ¿En qué aspecto se relaciona la fotografía con la carrera que desea seguir?
La fotografía es una herramienta útil en la investigación biológica, así como a la conservación, con la imagen transmites un mensaje que puede crear conciencia o conocimiento de cierta especie, familiarizarse con su nombre científico, su hábitat y cómo interactúa con el entorno, lo cual ha permitido también ser parte de muchos estudios relacionados con aquello.
8. Mientras observamos tus imágenes, podemos ver las diferentes formas en que se usa la luz dramática en la mayoría de ellas, ¿por qué crees que prefieres este tipo de luz?
Cuando tomo la foto, me gusta que tenga una fuerza e intento destacar ciertos detalles que quiero que se expongan. La luz expone todo ese arte oculto que pasa desapercibido, incluso si la imagen es en blanco y negro, la luz nos muestra que existe vida en esa imagen.
9. ¿Qué aspectos de la fotografía te atraen más como persona?
La fotografía me ha permitido mostrar ese lado imaginativo o sensible que tengo de ver a la naturaleza y a mi entorno. También la abilidad de poder compartirlo y aprender de otros estilos.
10. ¿Algún consejo en particular para la juventud de hoy que está empezando a experimentar con la fotografía?
Que disfruten y descubran todas las posibilidades que puede darnos la fotografía, estamos en constante descubrimiento, aún cuando tengas una cámara profesional, semiprofesional, análoga o tomes con el celular, lo importante es seguir aprendiendo y conocer personas que gustan del mismo arte , saliendo a tomar fotos, tomando cursos, ayuda mucho a mejorar y a conocer nuevas técnicas, pero sobre todo experimentar y no dejar que se extinga el arte de mirar más allá de lo que comúnmente se vé.
